Coral nephrolithiasis

Coral nephrolithiasis is a complex disease that can cause the death of the renal parenchyma and kidney. The appearance of coral stones is associated with a sharp increase in the amount of protein and salt in the urine, accompanied by an infectious lesion.

Previously, stones that occupied the entire kidney cavity could be surgically removed only together with the organ. The DIEVO Surgical Solutions Center in Kyiv has all the modern minimally invasive technologies that provide a unique opportunity to completely remove such a stone without cutting the skin and at the same time not only preserve the kidney, but also practically avoid injuring it.

Prolonged disruption of the urine outflow from the renal pelvic system (ureteral stricture, pyeloureteral segment) in most cases leads to the formation of large stones. Other causes of stone formation are diseases of the endocrine system, such as hyperparathyroidism.

Excessive excretion of calcium in the urine in such patients contributes to the rapid formation of calcium salts stones. Metabolic disorders, in particular purine metabolism, are typical for patients with uric acid stones.

Symptoms of the disease

Such patients often suffer from overweight, diabetes mellitus, and gout. Kidney stones of an infectious nature are formed as a result of prolonged infection of the urinary tract with bacteria that change the acidity of the urine to the alkaline side.

Such stones are characterized by a tendency to recur quickly after their removal. Coral-like stones are also formed in people with congenital kidney disease and abnormalities of their structure, with tubulopathy.

For a long time, coral stones can occur without bright symptoms, only periodically causing minor pulling pains in the kidney area. The frequency of pain and its intensity increases with the growth of the stone and the increase in impaired urine flow from the kidney.

In the later stages, complaints will be due to a chronic inflammatory process, sclerosis of the renal parenchyma and the development of chronic renal failure.

Patients suffer from almost constant pain in the kidney area. There may also be a prolonged increase in body temperature, weakness, blood in the urine, and occasional renal colic.

The main method of treatment for patients with coral-like kidney stones is surgical.

Currently, the “gold standard” is percutaneous nephrolithotripsy.
