Crushing of kidney stones (laser nephrolithotripsy PCNL)

Percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (PCNL) is the crushing of kidney stones.
The Dievo Center successfully uses the most advanced technologies for crushing kidney and ureteral stones:
- flexible (fiber) technology;
- standard rigid technology;
- mini percussion technology.
We are a unique center because we have the ability to perform kidney stone surgery using several techniques during one operation. This is an innovative method of intra-renal surgery.
Undoubtedly, the most effective method of crushing kidney stones (calculi) in modern surgery is the operation – percutaneous nephrolithotripsy mini-percutaneous technology.
Percutaneous nephrolithotripsy is not only the most common kidney stone crushing operation but also remains one of the most difficult. This technique requires extensive experience of a urologist-surgeon.
You can find out more details directly at a consultation with our urologist-surgeon. You can make an appointment online or by phone: 0 800 33 61 58 (free for all operators).
Briefly speaking, the method is percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (crushing of kidney stones).
This endoscopic method of performing this operation makes it possible for the urologist to gain access to the kidney itself and the stone that is in it through the skin. Access is made through a small hole in the patient’s skin to insert a surgical endoscope (nephoscope), and a laser (lithotriptor) is brought through its channels, which destroys the stone. Then for several days, drainage is inserted into the kidney, a special tube (nephrostomy) for the outflow of urine (not always). After the drainage is removed, a sterile dressing is applied.
This method allows patients with both single and multiple kidney stones to undergo surgery.
Indications for laser percutaneous nephrolithotripsy
- coral-like concretions;
- large stones (more than 3 cm);
- Impossibility of removal remotely or with a flexible nephroscope;
- cystine stones;
- stones in an abnormal or the only remaining kidney;
- skeletal deformities and some forms of obesity that make other crushing methods impossible.
Contraindications to percutaneous nephrolithotripsy
- untreated urinary tract infections,
- blood clotting disorders,
- skin lesions in the access area,
- pregnancy and pathologies that impede access to the kidney (splenomegaly (enlarged spleen), some forms of obesity).
Advantages of percutaneous nephrolithotripsy
- high efficiency of the method (98% of stones are removed);
- low-traumatic method – a single puncture is made, preserving the surrounding organs and tissues;
- short rehabilitation and hospitalization period.
Preparation for percutaneous nephrolithotripsy
Preparation for any surgical intervention requires the patient to follow all the instructions of the surgeon. Preoperative preparation consists of mandatory examinations: laboratory or diagnostic (ultrasound, ECG, CT). For women, an examination by a gynecologist is mandatory.
These are necessary measures to find out the patient’s condition at a given time and confirm that there are no contraindications to the planned surgery.
After the operation, the patient will be recommended and given the necessary recommendations: adherence to the diet (salty and fatty foods, alcohol are excluded), antibacterial drugs are prescribed, physical activity is limited, hypothermia and overheating are unacceptable.
