Vascular Surgeon word of advice

What can happen if varicose veins are left untreated?

It’s always better to prevent a disease than to treat it, unfortunately not every patient is diagnosed in early stages of the disease.

The earliest warning indicators to visit a vascular surgeon is feeling of fatigue in the legs at the end of the day, feeling heaviness of lower extremities and swelling of the ankles. These symptoms usually disappear after resting horizontally or elevating the legs for some time.

In the second stage of varicose veins, by touching and palpating your legs, you can easily feel veins and nodules forming after prolonged sitting or standing. At this stage the risk of blood clot formation increases.

At the third stage of varicose veins patients can suffer from a constant swelling of the legs that starts around the late afternoon which does NOT completely resolve after night sleep even with elevation of lower extremities.

The fourth stage is represented by discoloration of the skin of the lower extremities and skin atrophy might appear at this point.

Patients at the fifth stage of varicose veins usually present with trophic ulcers that are capable of healing giving time and care.

The 6th stage is characterized by chronic trophic ulcers that are NOT capable of healing and are easily complicated by infection.

Initial visit to phlebologist at the DIEVO center:

For out specialists, the main aspect in the approach to the treatment of diseases in modern vascular surgery is painless diagnosis. This can be achieved by ultrasound duplex scanning of vessels of the legs. This type of examination is performed at the initial consultation during the patient’s examination. Treatment strategy is selected on individual bases depending on the results obtained during examination and patient’s venous hemodynamics.
